On 19 December in La Galleria Nazionale, Martí Guixé will write the tag “Honour Cheap Furniture” on 150 white and 30 green monobloc chairs, along with 5 green monobloc tables, in an open performance. The chairs and tables will then be part of the furnishings at the museum auditorium and in la Sala delle Colonne, to be used as normal chairs and tables.

Honour Cheap Furniture is the third version of the Statement Chair Series, in which Martí Guixé has addressed the phenomenon of cheap industrial products and designer chair “labels”. The classic monobloc plastic chair has many qualities of good design: it is inexpensive, democratic, technically plausible, functional, and robust; however, it suffers from a bad reputation.
The previous series were “Stop Discrimination of Cheap Furniture” (2004) and”Respect Cheap Furniture” (2009).The Stop Discrimination of Cheap Furniture series is found complete in the collection of the Frac Nord-Pas-de-Calais, while examples ofRespect Cheap Furniture are in the collections ofMAK di Vienna, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and Vitra Design Museum, in Weil am Rhein.
Martí Guixé (Barcelona 1964) is a designer working behind the borders of the discipline, formed in Barcelona and Milan; he has been exhibiting in MoMa NY, MACBA, Museu del Disseny Barcelona, la Triennale di Milano, MART di Rovereto, the Centre Pompidou and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma.
At the Galleria Nazionale in 2016, he designed the hall layout and the bookshop, creating simple and functional furniture displaying hand written information with Bodoni typography.
