The archives of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art hold documents and funds that tell the story of the museum and offer the public valuable research tools on Italian cultural and artistic history from the nineteenth century to today.

The Institute Archive

The documents produced by the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art are evidence of its multiple activities starting in 1883, the year of its foundation. The archive – current, filing and historical – represents the institutional memory of the National Gallery and is witness to its changes and developments.

The Bio-iconographic Archive

The Bio-iconographic Archive collects documents on more than 25,000 artists, including newspaper clippings, invitations, brochures, press releases, posters and photos. There is also a section on art topics with over 400 headwords and 13 historical funds, indexed and available online.

The Photographic Archive

The Photographic Archive, born in 1945, has a rich heritage of images that includes documentation of the museum’s exhibits and its exhibitions. Currently, the Photo Library has 10,000 black and white photo prints, 15,000 slides, 60,000 black and white negatives including 500 glass plates, 6,000 photocolors, VHS and DVDs.

The Library

The Library preserves and makes available to the public 79,500 inventoried volumes, 1,500 specialized publications, a collection of catalogs documenting the Italian exhibitions of the twentieth century and the patrimony of monographs and exhibition catalogs, rare volumes and artist books acquired from the end century.
